New England Maker: Woodboogah {+ Giveaway!}

As you know by now, I love sharing about companies and products we love on the blog and our Instagram - and most especially those made right here in New England!  Next in our little series to showcase some of these great New England Makers is Elizabeth Van Deavender from Woodboogah!
{Psssst... Don't forget to see details on how to enter the Giveaway to win a pair of their new Cashmere Cuffs!}

New England Maker Woodboogah

Woodboogah is best known for their cashmere beanies and scarves and, new this year, their cashmere cuffs! They bring a touch of luxury to items that you can wear everyday.

Tell me a little about yourself and your business.

I don't know if there is a short version because every job I held, every failure I overcame, every small victory I had, and every life lesson I was taught all connected when I created Woodboogah.

Elizabeth Van Deavender of Woodboogah

Elizabeth Van Deavender of Woodboogah

My family built a company that manufactured in Maine so that was a huge influence as to why I got into my field, and why I choose Maine for Woodboogah.

I didn't go to college right after high school.  I started very young at the bottom in U.S. manufacturing.  Over the years, I quickly climbed the corporate ladder.  I later discovered I want to work in apparel manufacturing.  I received a scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in California.  As I was studying fashion design in Los Angeles, I quickly realized how wasteful apparel manufacturing is.  I started working with companies to decrease their waste and increase their production in the U.S. After graduating, I worked with a company in downtown Los Angeles as a design consultant/product developer and quickly became the industry's go-to person for knitwear, especially cashmere working with a lot of US brands/labels, celebrities, musicians, and special projects for movies.  After falling in love with Eric, I blindsided everyone by quitting my job and packed up my life for Maine.  I created Woodboogah to be eco-friendly and grow and support our local community all while having a really amazing product that can stand up against the harshest elements and last for years to come.

Made in USA Woodboogah

My career will hit 10 years in September.  I'm very proud to have contributed to U.S manufacturing and helped create American jobs.  I will be celebrating with a 'Made in USA' tattoo stamped on the side of my foot (you know how you usually have to turn objects upside-down to see where they were made).

How did you start Woodboogah?

I had these ideas in my head for a few years to start a company and after I talked to Eric who's a full-time mechanical engineer and works a lot with companies to improve their U.S. manufacturing and he said I was onto something and I needed to do it right then. I knew I had to make the jump and make it happen. I quit my job and left my apartment on the curb in downtown Los Angeles. I sent three L.L.Bean duffle bags to Eric in Maine. I lived out of one suitcase for a month while I finished up my design jobs in Los Angeles. I flew to New York for Fashion Week in September to see my clients fashion shows and say my goodbyes. Instead of returning to LAX from JFK, I flew to Portland, Maine and Woodboogah was started.

Woodboogah Beanies

Where did the name "Woodboogah" come from?

Woodboogah was Eric's nickname.  When I was living and working in Los Angeles, Eric would come visit me when we were first dating.  I had clients from LA, New York, Japan, Italy, and Paris. Eric would rock a Boston Red Sox's hat with a huge smile and talked in a wicked Maine accent being a native of Maine Eric was so happy and nice to everyone he met.  He'd give you the shirt off his back.  (I always say Mainahs are the nicest people you'll meet).  All the clients were curious who this guy was and where he came from, so we thought of the nickname Woodboogah.  It stuck!  Everyone loved the nickname and loved Eric.  When Eric and I were talking about starting a company months later it was a no brainer to call it Woodboogah.

Eric and I are partners in business and in life.  Eric will always tell people Woodboogah is 120% all me and my company, but if I'm completely honest there would be no Woodboogah without Eric.  He has supported every single idea from the start.  He inspires me.  He pushes me.  He is the original Woodboogah.  I would still be working in downtown Los Angeles if it wasn't for him.  I can't imagine a better partner in business or life.

Knitting with Woodboogah

Why cashmere?

"Who doesn't like cashmere?" - Seinfeld

There are a few popular yarn companies the luxury apparel industry uses and we use two of them.  This yarn is usually going into garments that retail for $500 to $5,000 dollars.  This forced me to be really innovative with our manufacturing process with:
1.  Creating a really durable product that people can wear and enjoy.  We have brand ambassadors traveling the world with our beanies, testing them, and pushing them to the limits.  Our cashmere/wool blend is actually machine washable.
2.  Make this cashmere available for the average person to have.  It's only because of my relationships with these companies as a product developer/design consultant that they accept my small yarn orders.  I consider myself very lucky to be able to use this cashmere yarn for Woodboogah.

Woodboogah Beanie

Had you been making beanies for awhile or was this a new leap for you?

As a design consultant/product developer I had been making knitwear for a long time.  I knew what did and didn't work.  The leap for me was inventing the tools I used to make our beanies.  It was a lot of troubleshooting for the first year.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I wake up and beeline to the coffee.  I sit down and go through all of our social media accounts and emails.  I'm always looking for inspiration, brand ambassadors, and discovering new companies on social media.  I'm in the studio by 9:30AM.  Depending on where we are in the year, I'm usually knitting, planning photo shoots and meetings, or working on our website.  I usually leave the studio around 5:00PM.  Then it's dinner time!  I LOVE cooking.  Now that I own my own business, I get to invest more time into myself and learning to cook is one hobby I have dived into.  I love preparing big theme meals.  My friends and family have jokingly given me the nickname "Martha Stewart of Maine."  After dinner, it's our personal time.

Woodboogah at Work

What is your favorite part about owning your own company?

I have more balance between my personal life and career.  Before Woodboogah, I was missing a lot of birthdays, graduations, holidays with family and friends because of work.

Knitting for Woodboogah

And least favorite part?

As a "one-woman-show" I don't have a group of creative minds to bounce ideas off of like I did before, so I definitely miss those creative meetings.  I love it when companies reach out to me for collaborations or one-of-a-kind styles for their stores.

What has been the most exciting moment for Woodboogah since you started?

Every time I get to hear about or see people enjoying my products.  I'm so thankful for all the love and support I receive, it means everything to me.

What advice do you have for people just starting out?

Persistence as Eric would say.  Never listen to anyone who tells you you can't do something to pursue your dreams.  I've had a lot of doors slam in my face during my career but I never let that stop me.  I still continued to achieve my goals no matter how ridiculous people think they are.

Woodboogah Cashmere Beanies

What is your long-term goals?

Our Woodboogah homestead on a much larger scale.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I take it month by month.

Who's one of your favorite New England Makers?

I'm obsessed with C&M Ceramics right now. Ever since I found them on Instagram I've been trying to snag some of their Mariner mugs for my kitchen, but still no cigar. I love all their products. The flask is wicked cool.

Small Business Feature: Willow Crowns

Willow Crowns has probably been my favorite mama-made business I've watched grow over the last few years.  I started following Willow Crowns around the same time I launched my own Etsy shop and blog and Megan's hard work and resulting meteoric success has been such an inspiration!  Megan was kind enough to answer a few questions for me about how she got started, how she handles the work-mama balance, and where she hopes to take Willow Crowns in the future.

BIRCH LANDING HOME:  Tell me a little about yourself and your business.

WILLOW CROWNS (MEGAN): I'm a lifelong New Englander living in Texas with my husband and three year old daughter, trying to keep it all balanced! I love coffee (French press is my new addiction), hair and beauty products, and I honestly never thought I'd be an entrepreneur! Willow Crowns in my second baby and over the past 2.5 years has grown into what I like to think is the premier destination for stylish, timeless hair accessories for ladies of all ages.

Megan, the mama behind Willow Crowns.

Megan, the mama behind Willow Crowns.

BLH:  How did you start Willow Crowns?  Did you always make headbands and accessories or was this a new leap for you?

WC: When my daughter was ten months old we were newly relocated to Houston and I was struggling to find my groove. Being alone in a new city with a little baby was stressful and I was looking for something to help me decompress and fill my time, something that could me "mine." I was already (occasionally) making her some headbands and thought I'd give opening an Etsy shop a try! I ended up enjoying it so much and found it so fulfilling that I kept trying to grow, improve, and ultimately make it a full-time business.

Grow with me Willow Crowns headband set

BLH:  What does a typical day look like for you?  Do you set aside specific time for work and for family?  How do you handle the dreaded nap strike?  (okay.. that last question is mostly for me)

WC: There's really no "typical" day around here, but I try to dedicate my mornings as much as possible to Olivia. I'll schedule playdates, etc during that time. During nap time (or "quiet rest time" with the iPad during nap strikes), I handle the bulk of my administrative work, which means replying to e-mails, preparing social media content, and getting orders filled. Late afternoon is ideally earmarked as family time, prepping meals, folding laundry, etc. and I handle the rest (mostly production) after she goes to bed.

I have a part-time production assistant who comes to the studio once a week and she helps keep our inventory stocked, and I'll do the rest while my daughter is at a Mother's Day Out program two days a week. All this keeps my days pretty busy, but I wouldn't have it another way! I love knowing that there's lots to be done and I find it really gratifying to check it all off my list as the day goes on.

Headbands in the studio

BLH:  What is your favorite part about owning your own company?  And least favorite part?

WC: This is a tough one, and they're kind of the same! The flexibility of being able to work from home and set my own hours is huge. My family is my top priority and being able to adapt to changes in our life/schedule/whatever is going on has really helped me maintain a balance. On the flip side, since I work from home, I'm never off the clock. My mind is always racing with ideas, to-do's, and the studio sometimes calls to me late at night when I know there's work to be done. Finally, I have to add in the personal satisfaction as another favorite. When a collection does well, our customers are happy, and we continue to grow, it feels enormously satisfying to have my name attached to that!

Ballet bow set

BLH:  What has been the most exciting moment for Willow Crowns since you started?

WC: So many to choose from! The most recent one is the one I'd have to award "most exciting moment" to, though! Over the holidays West Elm reached out and asked us to do a pop-up shop in one of their Houston stores. I love West Elm and the idea to work with such an established and respected brand was a huge of highlight of WC's short life.

BLH:  What advice do you have for people just starting out?

WC: I usually give two separate pieces of advice, the first of which is photography is critical. If you have a great product, great service, and poor photography, your product just won't move. Investing in a photographer or working a trade with a local photographer can put you at a huge advantage when marketing your product. I've spent the two years working on my own photography skills so that I can combine my work with the photographer's we hire and have social media accounts and a website that always look top notch and the better our products look, the more they sell!

Secondly, hang in there! Growing a business can take time (lots of time sometimes depending on your market) and it's important not to compare yourself to others. Staying focused on your product, your brand, your shop, and working persistently even when times are slow will serve you well. Strike up friendships with other local creatives, be consistent on social media, be true to your aesthetic, and things will come together!

Willow Crowns behind the scenes photos

BLH:  What is your long-term goal?  Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

WC: I'm so excited to watch WC grow over the next few years! A move into retail establishments is very much on my mind for the near future and I'd also like to grow our family in the next five years. Hopefully five years from now I can follow up and have another baby, a few more employees, and lots more ladies wearing Willow Crowns!

Where to Buy Boot Cuffs CHEAP!

As you know, I'm all for shopping small and shopping local.  But sometimes you just gotta be frugal too.  These fashionable boot cuffs are crazy-cheap and a great deal wether you're buying one for yourself, a few stocking stuffers for your family and friends, or if you're looking for a little gift to get everyone in your department at work.
Please note, prices on Amazon are subject to change.  Prices mentioned in this post are what the product was listed at at the time of purchase.  | This post contains affiliate links |

Where to buy fashionable boot cuffs cheap!

So where did I find these super-cute boot cuffs?  Believe it or not - Amazon.
Since we live over an hour from big box stores, Amazon has become our go-to for paper towels, cereal, and all the other pricey grocery basics.  Lately I've also been turning to them for clothing and accessory needs rather then hoping in the car with the little one and making the long trip to the store.

While browsing Amazon for stocking stuffers several weeks ago I came across these amazingly cute (and cheap!) boot cuffs.  I decided to order some to check them out in person but underestimated how long it would take to ship and they arrived after Christmas.  Since they come directly from the manufacturer/distributor (overseas), it can take up to 1-2 months to arrive - so be sure to plan (way) ahead.

The first pair I tried were these cute knitted grey cuffs with lace and button detail.  I loved the look and color of these and thought they looked great with my boots.  However, I felt as though they were pretty tight.  I have large calves and these just fit over my leggings - they certainly wouldn't fit over my jeans unfortunately.

These cuffs come in 6 colors and most are only $2.30/pair!  They are not Prime eligible but shipping is very cheap as well.

The other pair I tried were these pretty white lace cuffs.  These were super-stretchy and would fit most people with no problem.  Adding this touch of lace is a great way to dress up just about any outfit!

These cuffs come in 12 different colors so you can match every outfit you own and only cost $0.87/pair - yes, really!!  They aren't Prime-eligible either but shipping is very inexpensive.

While all the cuffs had some loose strings that needed to be trimmed and they didn't come in any kind of packaging to speak of, I was still really satisfied with the look and the quality of the cuffs.  If you were to give them out as gifts, I would just recommend trimming the loose strings first and either wrapping them or rolling them and tying with a ribbon for better presentation.
